**Warning** Maggots in sheath!
With the hot, wet, humid weather we are experiencing this summer there have been an increase in the number of flies around and consequently we are seeing more cases of maggots in horse’s sheaths.
Clinical signs can easily be confused with colic signs and include kicking at abdomen, rolling, pawing the ground, flank watching, tail swishing, restlessness etc. Treatment includes sedating and thoroughly cleaning the area – removing the maggots and eggs gives instant relief from the irritation caused.
Prevention includes regular cleaning of excess smegma with plain warm water and vigilant fly control protocols. For more advice please call and speak to one of our vets on 01494 876555
