Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP is an exciting regenerative medicine that has shown very promising results as an anti-inflammatory and promoter of healing.
PRP is an autologous product, that is created using the horse’s own blood, which reduces the risk of producing an adverse reaction. The blood is collected in a sterile manner and spun down in a special machine that seperates the platelets. These are rich in growth factors and have anti-inflammatory properties. When injected into the injured area, they promote increased blood flow and increased healing by exerting cellular responses. PRP is most commonly used to aid repair in tissues that have poor intrinsic healing properties, e.g. tendons, ligaments and cartilage. PRP has also demonstrated very good anti-inflammatory properties in human medicine for joint pain and is frequently used as part of a treatment protocol for inflamed joints in horses.
This treatment contains no prohibited substances so there are no withdrawl times following treatment. It is therefore a useful adjunct to treating horses during their competition season.
